Providing Trauma, Burnout & EMDR Therapy and Educational Support for Parents
Therapy for Anxiety, Stress, Burnout, and Trauma
You’ve been trying. You’ve read books, sought advice, taken deep breaths, maybe you’ve even tried therapy before. You’re struggling, and it’s getting worse. If the solution was simple, you would have already found it. You need more, but you’re not sure what, and you don’t know who can really help you get your life to where you want it to go. Trust, safety, and hope aren’t sentiments that you take lightly, and it is hard to step forward into the unknown. You feel stuck, but you can’t stay stuck here.
Therapy With Dr. Corrie Goldberg to Feel Less Overwhelmed and More Comfortable With Your Life
You need better tools; to be more effective in your life and to know what to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed so that you don’t get swept away. Maybe it’s even possible to not feel such intense feelings, or to be pulled into them so often. You could manage better if you weren’t so exhausted; if you could come up for air. Imagine feeling connected, calm, and in control; being truly comfortable in your own skin, in your home, in your relationships, in your work, and in your life. You know that you want to get there, and that you deserve to be there, but you need help finding the way. When you’ve been carrying stress or trauma for a long time, it can become hard to see a clear way forward on your own.
Meet Dr. Corrie Goldberg: Certified EMDR Therapist & Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Chicago
I’m Dr. Corrie Goldberg, a licensed clinical psychologist (License #071.009961) and certified EMDR therapist who uses evidence-based trauma therapies, including EMDR therapy, to help people process trauma and reduce the intensity of difficult memories. I am also the founder of Shore Therapy. My work focuses on helping thoughtful adults and young adults navigate trauma, chronic stress, burnout, and anxiety, with particular expertise in neurodiversity-affirming and autistic-centered therapy for neurodivergent individuals and parents of neurodivergent children.
In addition to my clinical work, I am also an educator who develops articles, workshops, and online resources to help parents and professionals better understand trauma, neurodivergence, and parent burnout.
I know what it is like to recognize that you are flailing; that the energy that you are putting forth isn’t propelling you forward, and that you’re slipping below the waterline. It is in those moments that you need someone on the shore to see your struggle; to help you find a safe place to catch your breath; to be with you providing the support that you need until you are ready to swim on your own again.
My Approach to Therapy
I believe that meaningful change happens when people feel both understood and equipped with practical tools for moving forward.
In my therapy work, I help clients understand the patterns that keep them stuck; whether those patterns are shaped by stress, trauma, burnout, or long-standing ways of coping that once made sense but no longer serve them. Together we explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion, while also building skills that support greater stability, clarity, and choice.
My approach integrates trauma-informed care, nervous system awareness, and evidence-based therapy methods such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and IFS-informed Ego State/Parts work. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, I tailor therapy to each person’s goals, values, and lived experience.
How I Work With Clients in Therapy?
I work with motivated and responsible adults and young adults who are struggling with stress, dissatisfaction, and lack of connection. Many of the people I work with are also navigating the challenges of inadequately understood or supported neurodivergence in themselves or in their families, including parents who are experiencing significant stress or burnout while supporting neurodivergent children.
My clients are looking for an understanding, experienced, and skillful therapist who can help them learn how to more successfully navigate the areas of life that they have been avoiding, resenting, or where they have been feeling ineffective or out of control. They are deep thinkers with big questions about how to feel more engaged, confident, effective, and fulfilled; and we explore these ideas together. Although we don’t shy away from the tough stuff; connection, humor, empathy, and compassion all help to ease the process. We start from whatever point they are at and identify the goals that we aim to accomplish through therapy together. We pull together evidence-based therapeutic techniques that fit their individual preferences and needs. I welcome people of all genders; sexualities; races; sizes; neurotypes; religions; cultures; and relationship structures; and work with people from many marginalized groups.
Trauma, Anxiety, and Burnout Therapy
Through our therapy work together, you can learn how to identify the things that wear you down or push your buttons before you go over the edge. We can explore how large and small traumatic experiences from your past influence your reactions today, and strive to lessen their detrimental impact. I can help you build skills to quiet your mind and calm your body so that you feel safe and empowered to make thoughtful choices that are aligned with what you value; and commit to action toward change.
My work is grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming perspective that recognizes neurological differences such as autism and ADHD as valid forms of human diversity rather than problems to be fixed. Therapy focuses on helping people identify their personal goals and related barriers; understand their nervous system; access needed supports; and make choices aligned with their values and capacities.
EMDR Therapy and Evidence-Based Treatment
My approach integrates trauma-informed therapy; nervous system awareness and Polyvagal Theory; and evidence-based methods such as EMDR therapy. By combining traditional talk therapy with other tools and techniques that consider and work with the interconnection of thoughts, emotions, and the body, such as EMDR therapy, Ego State Parts Work, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), many people feel significant and lasting impacts from therapy that ripple out into many areas of their lives.
Corrie Goldberg, PhD: Training and Professional Experience
I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Among various honors received, I was an invited member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and was inscribed on the Bronze Tablet, the university’s highest honors distinction.
Desiring the highest level of education and training available in the field, I went on for graduate school in psychology at Northern Illinois University where I completed a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology and two APA-accredited Ph.D. programs; one in Clinical Psychology and one in School Psychology. I am one of only two people in the psychology graduate school’s over 50-year history to complete both of these doctoral programs.
Throughout over 25 years since beginning my training and employment in the field of clinical psychology, I have learned and worked in numerous environments including traditional and therapeutic schools spanning all ages from early intervention and preschool through college; hospital, university, residential, in-home, and community mental health settings; group and solo private practice settings; and with individuals from all across the lifespan, representing many unique clinical needs.
I have had the opportunity to engage in research and therapy with children, adolescents, and adults of many races, cultures, religions, genders, body sizes, sexualities, neurotypes, and levels of need for support. I have therapy experience working with people facing challenges in many areas including, but not limited to, trauma, PTSD, and complex PTSD; anxiety; depression and other mood disorders; grief and loss; life transitions; chronic illness; chronic pain; LGBT and identity issues; related to neurodiversity such as autism, ADHD, giftedness, learning disabilities, and being twice-exceptional; fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, and birth trauma; parenting; relationship issues; burnout; and self-esteem.
In addition to extensive training and experience with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and various other therapeutic treatment modalities, I am trained and certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR therapy) through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), and continue to engage in advanced EMDR education to support the daily use of EMDR in my therapy work. Specialized training in Ego State therapy has allowed me to incorporate IFS-informed, Parts Work treatment into my depth work with people to lend insight, understanding, and self-compassion; and to contribute to profound and lasting changes.
I also pursue ongoing training in neurodiversity-affirming and autistic-centered therapy practices from neurodivergent teachers. This work includes specialized continuing education focused on supporting autistic and other neurodivergent individuals through respectful, strengths-based approaches that prioritize autonomy, sensory needs, trauma recovery, and nervous system safety.
